Installation of a toilet on the upper floor

Installing a toilet is relatively straightforward and requires only a few connections, which you can make with standard tools. When installing a toilet upstairs, you should always install a new flexible water pipe with integrated fittings and washers. Probably the most difficult part of installing an upstairs toilet is getting the toilet into the upstairs bathroom. For this reason, the homeowner should enlist the help of an assistant to set up the toilet in the bathroom and lift it onto the toilet flange on the floor.

Step 1

Install one bolt from a toilet bolt set in the slots on each side of the toilet flange on the floor. To do this, insert the head of a bolt into the hole at the end of a slot and push the bolt to the end of the slot. Attach one of the nylon washers provided to the top of each screw and press it firmly against the top of the flange to hold the screws vertically against the flange.

Step 2

Insert a new wax ring into the recess around the drain hole in the flange. Press lightly on the ring to secure it to the flange.

Ask an assistant to lift the toilet bowl and align the holes on the bottom on each side with the screws. Slide one of the metal washers provided onto the tops of each bolt and thread a nut provided onto each bolt.

Step 3

Tighten the nuts in equal increments with an open-end wrench to ensure an even seal on the wax ring. Break off the protruding threaded portion of each bolt at the top of a nut with pliers. Press one of the plastic caps provided over each nut.

Step 4

Screw the fitting on one end of a flexible supply line onto the plastic thread on the bottom of the toilet tank. Tighten the supply line fitting securely with an adjustable wrench. Screw the connector on the other end of the line onto the threaded connection on the water shut-off valve on the wall. Tighten the connector with the wrench.

Step 5

Slowly open the shut-off valve until it is fully open. Allow the tank of the toilet to fill with water. Refer to the installation manual to adjust the float level to increase the flushing capacity, if desired.
